Isaac Newton (1643-1727), an English mathematician and physicist, set out the laws of motion and universal gravitation in his Principia of 1687. He also built a reflecting telescope and studied how a prism splits white light into colours. More than two centuries later, Einstein built on the work of Newton on gravitation.
