Albert Einstein, born in Ulm in 1879, worked on the theory of relativity for most of his life. In 1905 he showed that mass and energy are equivalent, the result written as E = mc2. Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1921 for his work on the photoelectric effect. He wrote hundreds of scientific papers, and his lectures on special relativity drew students from many countries.
